JERSEY CITY, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...Ramapo College received three goals and an assist from senior forward Melissa Demko (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and three other players had two goals as the Roadrunners outshot SUNY Old Westbury, 42-7, and posted an 11-2 win in the opening round of the Liberty Cup, hosted by New Jersey City University on Friday afternoon at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
Ramapo improves to 2-3 on the season while Old Westbury drops to 1-3. RCNJ led 4-2 with a 22-4 advantage in shots in the first half before tacking on seven more goals behind a 20-3 shot differential in the second period. In all, 24 different Roadrunners saw action. RCNJ had an 11-0 margin in corner kicks.
Demko, who played 34 minutes off the bench, scored three times while senior midfielder Melissa Pupo (Newton, NJ/Morris Catholic) tallied two goals and two assists off the bench. Senior forward Kimberly Bruno (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) and senior midfielder Brittney Harraka (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) collected two goals each in a reserve role.
Additional goals were netted by freshman midfielder Rachael Viscusi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland) and freshman defender Susan Hayes (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley).

In defeat, junior forward Cassandra Esposito (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream North) had a goal and an assist for the Panthers, including a game-tying goal at 30:23 of the first half—just 11 seconds after Demko had given Ramapo a 2-1 lead. Freshman midfielder Stephanie Falzarano (Roslyn Heights, NY/Roslyn) scored a game-tying goal in the 15th minute to even the game at 1-1.
Junior keeper Chynna Pitlock (Albany, NY/Milford Central) made 11 saves in 67:09 of action for Old Westbury before leaving with an injury. Ramapo rookie keeper Talia Auslin (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) made four saves in the win.
In the second game on Friday, host New Jersey City blanked Mount Saint Mary College, 3-0, behind a hat trick from junior forward JULIA CASERES (Union, NJ/Union).
On day two of the Liberty Cup, Ramapo meets MSMC at 12 p.m. followed by NJCU and Old Westbury at 3:30 p.m. Should NJCU and Ramapo both complete the tournament with 2-0 records, the first tie-breaker is fewest goals against, a category the Gothic Knights currently hold the advantage in after the 3-0 shutout. Goal differential and total goals scored are the second and third tie-breakers, if necessary.
