New Jersey City University women's soccer team opened its 2012 home schedule with its first victory of the season, 5-2, over SUNY Old Westbury, on Wednesday at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
NJCU (1-1-1) led 2-0 and 3-1 before the Panthers (0-3-0) twice made it a one-goal game in the second half. But two minutes after OW made it 3-2, senior defender
ANGELICA GLOVER (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) scored off a corner kick to expand the lead. NJCU outshot OW, 22-13 and leads the all-time series, 4-0 (18-3 goals differential).
Rookie defender

AMANDA SPETHMANN (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge) also contributed an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper
BRITTANY HOFFMAN (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) set aside five saves, including a pair of sliding stops well off her line to thwart potential breakaway goals.
The Panthers came into the game scoreless on the season and its first tally of the season resulted off an own goal before sophomore forward
Stephanie Maybie (Massapequa, NY/Plainedge) scored off an assist from junior forward
JoAnna Kettell (Hauppauge, NY/Hauppauge) in the 67
th minute. Sophomore keeper
Caitlin Thomas (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) stopped eight shots in defeat.
Taylor, who netted her second and third goals of the year, struck first at the 8:31 mark of the first half.
Spethmann fired a long throw in from the left side into the box and
Taylor poked the bouncing throw past
Thomas for a 1-0 lead.
NJCU made it 2-0 at the 24:11 as
Murphy chalked up her first collegiate point, setting up a breakaway with a feed from midfield. That sent
Filippone in on attack and she scored to the right of the diving keeper.
Filippone had five shots in the
game and all were on goal. NJCU led 2-0 at the half and held a 10-5 edge in shots.
Less than eight minutes into the second half, OW got on the board off an unlucky deflection for NJCU. Sophomore midfielder
Kassandra Franco (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) crossed a ball from the left endline that glanced off the back leg of
Spethmann and caromed past
Hoffman before she could react at the 52:41 mark.
NJCU quickly regained a two-goal advantage only 1:38 later.
Filippone fired a shot and
Thomas made the initial save before
Taylor slid to poke the rebound inside the right post for a 3-1 margin at the 54:19 mark.
OW cut it to 3-2 at 66:56 as
Kettell chipped a ball over
Hoffman that she could not handle cleanly and
Maybie knocked in the ball on the line.
But exactly two minutes later,
Lima launched a corner kick from the right side that found
Glover near the left post. After not taking the initial shot,
Glover pounded a ball inside the left post for a 4-2 lead and her first tally of the season.
Lima, who earned her first career point on the assist, added an insurance goal at 85:09 for her first NCAA marker.
Murphy flicked a pass into the box to open up a 1-on-1 and
Lima rocketed in a shot into the left side of the next from five yards out to clinch the win.
NJCU next heads to Newark, NJ on September 7 and 8 for the Scarlet Raiders Women's Soccer Classic. NJCU meets St. Joseph's College (LI) on Friday night at 8 p.m. before facing Widener University on Saturday.
