INDIANAPOLIS, IN (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the third straight week,
New Jersey City University women's soccer ranks No. 1 in the nation among 427 Division III schools that sponsor the sport in saves per game, according to the latest NCAA Division III Women's Soccer national statistical report released on October 21 by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for week seven of the 2013.
NJCU, for games played thru October 20, is averaging 15.73 saves per game in 11 matches with 173 total stops this year while facing 398 shots. The Gothic Knights margin over the second place team nationally, Baptist Bible College (Pa.) is now 1.09 saves per game more (14.64 per game).
While NJCU has given up its share of shots this season, two-time All-New Jersey Athletic Conference junior goalkeeper
BRITTANY HOFFMAN (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) has done an impressive job stopping most of them. The New Jersey Athletic Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week for September 23—currently ranks No. 3 in the country in saves per game at 13.82 and sixth in total saves (152).
Hoffman's saves per game ranking is her highest this season. She is 0.82 saves per game behind the national leader,
Katey King of Baptist Bible.
Hoffman has stopped at least 20 shots in a game five times this season—with a career-high 29 saves against No. 22 Rowan University on September 28 while limiting the high-powered Profs to just five goals against heavy pressure. She also has games of 21 saves against William Paterson University (September 21) and Richard Stockton (October 5) and 20 stops at Ramapo College (September 25) and against Rutgers-Newark (October 16). She has reached double figures in saves 19 times in her career and in the last seven consecutive games.
Hoffman's 29 saves are the third most by an individual in Division III this season. She also ranks 16
th on the single-game saves list for her two 21-save performances.
