New Jersey City University dominated Brooklyn College in shots and corner kicks, but the Bulldogs scored with eight seconds remaining in the first half and added a last minute insurance goal with the Gothic Knights pushing forward as Brooklyn edged NJCU, 2-0, in the 2013 season opener for both schools in the CSI Soccer Fall Classic on August 30 at the CSI Soccer Complex.
In a rematch of the 2012 ECAC Quarterfinals in which the clubs played out to a 3-3 tie before NJCU (0-1) advanced via a shootout, the Knights outshot Brooklyn (1-0) in each period, including 10-5 in the second half, for a 16-9 margin in the game, while boosting its scoring chances with a 9-1 differential on corner kicks. The win for Brooklyn was its first over NJCU since 1981.
NJCU, opening its 55
th season of intercollegiate soccer, put six shots on goal, but all were right at BC keeper
Kamil Ostrowski, who made six saves. Freshman goalkeeper
NICK NARDONE (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) made four stops for NJCU in his collegiate debut.
Brooklyn got on the board seconds before halftime as
Kenny Benitez hit a terrific shot, bending a ball to the far side netting around the outstretched, diving hands of
Nardone, after the BC player was able to challenge a Gothic Knight defender, making a move and uncorking the game-winning shot at 44:52.
With 33 seconds left in the game, most of NJCU's field players were pushed well ahead into Brooklyn territory, seeking the game-tying goal. But the Bulldogs were able to seal it off a turnover, as
Oleg Tykhonravov hit a long, line drive shot over the NJCU keeper who was also pushed ahead of the 18.
In all, 10 NJCU players were credited with a shot in the game. Senior sweeper
MOHAMED CONTEH (Trenton, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North), a returning All-Region and All-New Jersey Athletic Conference standout, had a game-high four shots while newcomer and junior midfielder
KELVIN FLORES (Hightstown, NJ/Hightstown) finished with three attempts.
On Sunday, September 1, NJCU meets host College of Staten Island in the second game of the tournament at 4:30 p.m.
