Perhaps no one has played a larger overall role in the University obtaining and developing new athletic facilities than Ed Weisman.
As Vice President for Administration and Finance at the University for 35 years, Weisman was a devoted fan and administrative advocate for the athletic program. He was instrumental in the development of the Gerrity Athletic Complex which consists of the football, baseball, softball and soccer fields, the planning and construction of the Athletic & Fitness Center, the installation of the tennis courts located on the West Campus, as well as renovations to the gymnasium in Fries Hall.
“I have fond memories of going with the teams to the Final Fours,” Weisman recalled. “But I have a great love for all the sports. Just being involved and making sure we had the facilities was important to me. I knew that our athletes could have the best, and I wanted them to have the best. It was a personal thrill for me to get to know the athletes, the coaches and the staff and to see them all perform under adversity. It never entered anyone’s mind that we could actually get new facilities, but we were able to do so.”
“Ed’s attendance at home and away athletic contests and his interest and enthusiasm for the athletic program may never be matched by another University staff member,” Athletic Director Larry Schiner emphasized. “Although he officially retired from the university on June 30, he will always be a Gothic Knight.”
Weisman currently lives in Pennsylvania with his wife Linda. He is a longtime member of the Green and Gold Booster Club.
