A three-time All-New Jersey State College Athletic Conference team selection under Coach Bob McNulty, Pepe was considered the most recognized soccer player since Hall of Famer Tom Briscoe of the great 1966 team. In 1974, he earned New Jersey-College Division and District All-American (N.J., Penna., Del.) first team honors. That year also saw Casais reach the Eastern finals of the U.S. Olympic team trials. Although he saw action at almost every position, Pepe led the team in scoring in 1974 with 15 goals, one of the highest season totals in college history. He was also selected to the All-State College division team in both 1972 and 1973.

Casais was the first Jersey City State Player ever to be selected in the professional soccer draft, having been tabbed on the fourth round by the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the North American Soccer League and on the seventh round by the Rhode Island Oceaneers of the American Soccer League.
