Joe was one of the World War II veterans who brought the game of baseball back to Jersey City State after the sport had been abandoned during the war. In 1949, when JCTC President Forrest Irwin decided to discontinue baseball at the college once again, he was one of a group who persuaded the President to retain the sport. Joe played four years of varsity baseball and was a very versatile performer. As a freshman he played all three outfield positions, second and third base, shortstop and pitcher. For the next three seasons, Joe played second base for the Jersey City Teachers College “Crows”, batting .357 in 1950 and .375 in 1951. His career batting average was a very impressive .329.
