Ray played four years under Hall of Fame coach Jack Stephans, during which time the Gothics posted won-loss records of 5-3, 7-2, 8-1, and 9-1. The 1972 squad was a tri-champion of the New Jersey State College Athletic Conference, while the 1973 team finished fourth in the final Lambert Bowl balloting - emblematic of the most outstanding college division team in the East.

Ray’s place-kicking prowess set six Jersey City State all-time records; most field goals, career (17); most field goals attempted, career (34); most extra points, career (111); most extra points, season (39); most extra points, game (9) and most consecutive extra points (19).
