PHILADELPHIA, PA (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)...The New Jersey City University women's outdoor track and field team qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship with a solid time in the 4x100-meter relay while competing in three events over the weekend at the 116th Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Franklin Field. The three-day pinnacle of collegiate track ran from April 22-24.
The 4x100 relay, comprised of sophomores IRIS WILCOX (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton), DESERIA SANDERS (Lakewood, NJ/Long Branch), and MELLISA GOODWIN (Howell, NJ/Howell) and freshman AUDREY WILSON (Deptford, NJ/Deptford), registered a mark of 50.17 seconds and exceeded the ECAC qualifying mark of 51.00 seconds. NJCU was ninth of 14 Division III teams and 87th overall among all colleges in the predominantly Division I field.
In the 4x100 relay, NJCU was one of nine schools in the third of 11 heats. LSU won the heat with the second fastest time at the event, followed by Georgetown University, Penn State University and the University of Florida.
Also on April 22, the 4x400 relay of Wilcox, Wilson, freshman KYE'AIRRE CARY (Newark, NJ/Queen of Peace) and Goodwin timed 4:22.91 in the 4x400. On April 23, Wilcox, Sanders and Goodwin ran the 4x200 relay but did not finish due to an injury to the NJCU anchor in that race.
NJCU will return to action on Saturday, May 8 at 12 p.m. in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship, hosted by The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.
