CAMDEN, NJ (www.NJCUGothicKnights.com)... New Jersey City University's men's soccer team gained a 1-0 lead on a free kick just 1:33 into a scoreless second half, but Franklin & Marshall College answered with two goals in a span of 1:03 and continued to score four unanswered markers as the Diplomats downed the Gothic Knights, 4-1, in the second round of the Cialella Soccer Classic, hosted by Rutgers University-Camden, on Sunday afternoon. In defeat, NJCU outshot the Diplomats, 25-19 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

The young NJCU defense, which had allowed only two goals in its first four games, allowed twice that amount in a span of nearly 38 minutes as the Knights (2-3) drop their third consecutive game—against teams with a combined 36 wins a year ago. F&M improves to 2-2 on the year. It was the first-ever meeting between the clubs in men's soccer.

Despite the loss, a pair of defenders who helped NJCU limit #5/6 ranked Johns Hopkins University to one goal on the opening day of the tournament—freshman MOSTAFA IBRAHIM (Jersey City, NJ/Elharam (Cairo, Egypt) and junior LIONEL EMABAT (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson—were named to the All-Tournament Team.

In defeat rookie keeper ZAKARY AZMI (New Milford, NJ/Emerson) made nine saves; senior goalie Zack Zamek (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough)had four saves for the Diplomats.

After a scoreless first half in which NJCU possessed a 13-7 margin in shots, the Knights got on the board early in the second half when senior midfielder CARLOS MORON (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) scored on a 20-yard free kick from the top of the box into the left side of the target—his first goal of the year at 46:33.

F&M sophomore back P.J. Succoso (Hockessin, DE/Archmere Academy) scored twice to give the Diplomats the lead for good. At 50:10, a loose ball created by a header off a long throw in from the right sideline was gathered by senior back Charlie Welch(Yardley, PA/Pennsbury). Welch, who missed a penalty kick off the left post at 15:10 of the first half, earned the assist as Azmi came off his line to smother the loose ball. Succoso got enough on his shot to find the net before NJCU's converging defense could clear it.

Moments later, Succoso put the Diplomats in front at 51:13. NJCU attempted to clear the ball out of its zone but it was trapped in the middle of the field, 35 yards out. Freshman forward Ben Beaver (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) and Succoso each made a run on the left side of the box, with a dribbling Beaverfeeding Succoso, who tucked a one-touch inside the left post.

F&M increased the lead to 3-1 at 67:01. Welch sent a long thru ball from midfield between two defenders, sending junior midfielder Eric Elicker (West Chester, PA/Henderson) sprinting in on a breakaway, before firing a shot into the top right corner. Beaver added a fourth goal with 2:01 remaining when he knocked in a loose ball in the box.

NJCU is idle until Saturday, September 18 at 1 p.m. when it hosts William Paterson University at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field in the first New Jersey Athletic Conference game of the season.
