Freshman forward JUAN ESPINOZA was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after he scored the first two goals of the game in NJCU’s 9-0 road blowout of the College of Staten Island on October 3. He has been named the NJCU Men's Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time this season.
Espinoza, who earlier received the NJAC honor for week two on September 12, scored the accolade for week six of the 2005 season.
Overall, the Gothic Knights, who were 9-3 overall and winners of 16 of their last 19 games prior to Monday’s 6-0 rout of Farmingdale Sate, have achieved a conference Player or Rookie of the Week award in four of the first six weeks of the season.
In the October 3 game, NJCU outshot CSI by a 44-3 margin and his first goal just 1:52 into the contest proved to be his fourth game-winner of the year. Espinoza added his second goal at 10:01 to give the Knights a 2-0 edge. He started and played only the first 18 minutes of the contest, in what was NJCU’s only game of the week.
Through this past weekend, Espinoza continued to lead the club with goals (11), points (23), and game-winning goals (4). Through October 9, he led the conference in goals per game (1.00) and was tied for first in game-winners (4). Additionally, Espinoza ranks second in the NJAC in goals, points, and points per game (2.09), is tied for third in shots per game (3.09), and lists tied for fifth in total shots (34).
