WEEK of: OCTOBER 1-7, 2007

For the second time this season, freshman striker JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) shares the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week honor as she had her assault on school history reach a quick culmination, scoring five goals and 11 points, with 35 shots and 15 shots on goal. She established single-season school records for goals (18), points (38) and shots (86) during the week and achieved a single-game school record with 16 shots, as the Gothic Knights went 2-1 in that span.

In a 2-0 win against Keystone College on October 1, Albuja scored both of NJCU’s goals. The rookie scored her 14th and 15th goals of the season in only her 10th game to shatter the single-season scoring record and achieved a single-game scoring record with 16 shots and seven on goal. She added her third game-winning goal and scored the first goal of a game for the fourth time this season.
Albuja broke the single-season record of 14 set by Kelly Daly in 2005. The 16 shots by Albuja broke the single-game school record of 14 accomplished twice by Carine Carvalheiro (2003 and 2005).

Albuja opened the scoring at 12:30 of the first half when she received a thru ball from midfield and slammed in a shot from the left wing to tie the record. NJCU led 1-0 at the half. With the game closer on the scoreboard than the statistics would indicate, Albuja added an important insurance goal at 50:29 of the second half. After taking a pass from midfield, Albuja weaved through five defenders upfield, before blasting in a shot from the right wing for the record-breaker. She also hit the post on a shot later in the game.

In a 2-1 loss at SUNY-Farmingdale on October 3, Albuja had chances to tie the game, finishing with a game-high eight shots, including four on goal.

In NJCU’s 9-0 rout of City College of New York on October 6, Albuja had three goals, including her 18th of the year, and an assist to break the single-season points record.

Albuja notched her third hat trick of the season and sixth multiple goal game of the year to extend her own single-season record of 18 goals, and combined with two assists, became NJCU’s single-season record-holder with 38 points, eclipsing Katie Feehan’s 2005 mark of 34 points. She teamed with sophomore Michelle Vasquez as each collected hat tricks—marking only the second time in program history that two players collected at least three goals in the same game.

Albuja attempted 11 shots in the game, giving her 86 in 12 games, breaking the single-season school standard for shots set by Feehan in 2004 (79). Albuja moved into a tie for fourth in school history in career goals (18) and tied for fifth in career points (38).

During a stretch of the first half, the Knights scored three goals in a span of 1:32, including two by Albuja. The three goals in 1:32 were just two seconds shy of the single-game school record for three fastest goals.  Albuja’s final goal in the second half helped Katie Feehan become NJCU’s all-time assists leader. Albuja later assisted on Feehan’s 30th career goal.

Albuja currently leads the NJAC in goals (18), points (38), shots (86), shots per game (7.17), and ranks second in points per game (3.17) and goals per game (1.50). Her three game-winners are tied for fourth in the NJAC.
