WEEK of: OCTOBER 8-14, 2007
For the sixth week in a row and 31st time in her career, senior middle blocker LIZZELLE CINTRON (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week after she posted simply staggering statistics of 9.67 points, 8.11 kills, 4.11 digs, 1.00 blocks and 0.89 service aces per game, while hitting .573 overall (73-10-110) in a 5-0 week for NJCU.
She was named the NJAC Player of the Week for the 17th time in three years and the fifth time in six weeks this year, tallying 87.0 points, 73 kills, 37 digs, nine blocks and eight aces in nine games over four matches. Overall, NJCU won it 12th consecutive match and extended its best start to a season in school history to 24-4, while improving to 40-0 at home since the start of the 2004 season. She was named Most Valuable Player for the fourth consecutive year of the Gothic Knight Invitational, won by NJCU.
In a rematch of the last two NJAC champions on October 9, Cintron crushed 28 kills and added 14 digs to notch her 99th career double-double, and the Gothic Knights extended their home court winning streak to 37 consecutive matches, as NJCU dismantled Richard Stockton College, 3-0 (30-22, 30-22, 30-19), for sole possession of first place in the conference. Amazingly, Cintron had as many kills by herself as the entire Stockton team. Cintron posted a staggering .511 hitting percentage, with 28 of NJCU’s 46 total kills and a line of 28-5-45. She added 14 digs, two aces and two blocks. The 28 kills in three games tied for the third most in a three-game match in program history, and gave Cintron her 34th career match with 25 or more kills.
In a sweep of Kean University on October 11, 3-0 (30-11, 30-23, 30-8), Cintron moved into eighth place in Division I, II and III history with 2,731 kills in 467 games, surpassing South Florida’s Michelle Collier, who had 2,729 kills from 1998-02 in 481 games for that Division I program. In two games, Cintron, the Division III national leader in kills per game and total kills, posted eight kills (8-1-14), a .500 hitting percentage, four digs and three blocks.
In three matches in the 14th annual Gothic Knight Invitational, won by NJCU for the fourth consecutive year, Cintron earned Most Valuable Player honors for the fourth consecutive year, moved into seventh place in Division I, II and III history with 2,768 career kills and notched her 100th career double-double.
The Gothic Knights defeated Lehman College in the opening match, 3-0 (30-13, 30-13, 30-8), knocked off New Jersey Athletic Conference rival William Paterson University, 3-0 (30-23, 30-13, 30-11) and cruised past York College in 39 minutes, 3-0 (30-9, 30-14, 30-7). The Knights are 16-0 this year in matches that last three games.
Cintron, who did not play in the final match, combined for 37 kills in four games over two matches, finishing with a .647 hitting percentage for the tournament (37-4-51), 18 digs and five aces. With 2,768 kills in 471 games following the tournament, she is seventh in the history of NCAA collegiate volleyball at any level, eclipsing Division I Long Beach State University’s Tara Cross, who had 2,767 kills in 488 games from 1986-89.
In NJCU’s win over William Paterson alone, Cintron finished with 31 kills (31-4-42) for a .643 percentage, 15 digs and four blocks. The 31 kills were one shy of her own single-match school record for kills in a three-game match. That result was her 100th career double-double, 35th match with 25 or more kills, 19th career match with 30 or more kills, and fourth 30-kill match of the season. She also exceeded 500 kills in a season for the fourth year in a row and increased her NCAA Division III national-leading average to 5.98 per game.
In the win over Lehman, she hit .857 overall, smacking six kills and no errors in seven attempts, adding four aces. She only played the first game.
Against WPU, NJCU’s seventh straight victory over the Pioneers, Cintron had more than double the total kills of the entire WPU squad, finishing with a .643 percentage (31-4-42), the 31 kills, 15 digs, and four blocks. She did not play against York.
