For the first time in his career, senior point guard
SHY MARTINEZ (Union City, NJ/Union Hill) is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week after playing a key role in a 1-1 week for the Gothic Knights at the Captains Shootout in Newport News, VA. In two games, he averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 25.0 minutes per game, while shooting .571 from the floor (8-14), .800 from three-point range (4-5) and 1.000 from the foul line (6-6).
In NJCU's 83-73 win over host Christopher Newport University, in the opening round of tournament on January 4, Martinez notched a season-high 17 points, with three assists and three rebounds in 24 minutes as the Knights posted their first ever win over CNU. Martinez shot 4-of-5 from the field, 3-of-3 from three-point range and 6-of-6 from the line,
In the first half, NJCU built a 13-4 lead before CNU tied it at 15-15 and 16-16. A pair of three-pointers by Martinez (4:59 and 3:28) helped NJCU move in front 33-20, as the Knights uncorked a 17-4 run. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Martinez made it a 40-23, 17-point cushion, as the Knights outscored CNU 24-7 to close the first period. CNU cut it to nine with 1:07 reamining (75-66) before Martinez sank two foul shots. He made a pair of foul shots in the final 10 seconds to seal it as NJCU went 8-for-8 from the line in the final minute.
In a 71-56 loss to Hampden-Sydney College on January 5, Martinez had nine points and three rebounds, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 1-of-2 from three-point range. With NJCU trailing by 16, 28-12, with 4:36 left in the period, NJCU battled back, scoring the final 11 points of the period, and shaved the deficit to five at halftime, 28-23, after a triple by Martinez.
On the season, Martinez has started all 12 games for NJCU (8-4) and is averaging 7.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.92 assists per game, whole shooting .483 from the field (29-60), .476 from three-point range (10-21) and a team-leading .889 from the free throw line (16-18). He has made eight consecutive free throws and 15 of his last 16. NJCU's fourth leading scorer has also added 14 steals.
In the New Jersey Athletic Conference statistical leaders thru January 6, Martinez ranks sixth in the league in assists. If he averaged the league minimum of 2.0 free throws made per game, he would lead the conference in that category.
