WEEK of: FEBRUARY 11-17, 2008
For the first time in his career, freshman outside hitter CHRIS EDRA is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week, after the 5-foot-6 younger brother of head coach Carlo Edra proved he is yet another freshman with a bright future for the Gothic Knights. He is the first men's volleyball player to receive the honor this season. The week started when he was featured nationally by NCAASports.com. He was also named the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Metro Division Rookie of the Week; it's the third week in a row an NJCU rookie has received this honor.
In 16 games over five matches in a 2-3 week for NJCU (9-7) , he averaged 3.91 points, 3.69 kills and 2.06 digs per game, leading the Knights in the latter two categories.
In his best match of the week, the rookie slammed a career-high 19 kils and hit .273 (19-7-44) with seven digs in a 3-1 neutral site setback to Emmanuel College (27-30, 30-25, 26-30, 29-31) on February 16. He had nine kills and hit .227 (9-4-22) with seven digs in a loss at SUNY New Paltz in the first game of that tri-match, as the Hawks won 30-18, 30-23, 30-24. He opened the week with nine kills and six digs in a 3-1 home loss (25-30, 15-30, 30-21, 24-30) to SUNY New Paltz in an NECVA Metro match.
In a home tri-match on February 17, he bagged 13 kills, with eight digs and three aces in a 3-0 sweep of Medgar Evers (30-8, 31-29, 30-27) and added nine kills in NJCU's 3-0 (30-16, 30-26, 30-10) sweep against Yeshiva. NJCU is 19-0 all-time against Yeshiva (all sweeps) and improved to 3-1 in the Metro Division.
On the season, the guitar-wielding rookie is averaging 3.18 points, 2.80 kills, 2.05 digs and 0.29 aces in his older brother's rookie year as a collegiate head coach. He is 47th in the 39-team conference in kills per game and 48th in digs per game.
