After batting .562 (9-16) with a staggering .682 on-base percentage and .813 slugging rate, senior shortstop SUSIE MATSUTANI (Gallup, NM/Gallup) has been named the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week and the second time in her career. She also has become the first Gothic Knight softball player in seven years to be selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week when the two-year NJCU captain received the award today from the league.
Behind Matsutani, the No. 3 hitter in the lineup, NJCU won three games (3-3), including the 300th game in program history when the Knights secured a 6-5 road win over two-time defending NJAC Champion and 2006 national champion Rutgers University-Camden on March 29. NJCU is 8-8 overall and 1-1 in the league.
For the week, Matsutani had seven runs, five RBIs, six walks, two triples and two steals. She hit safely in every game in which she had an official plate appearance.
Matsutani is the first NJCU athlete since former star Jen Barletta in week one of the 2001 season to be named NJAC Softball Player of the Week and just the sixth in program history.
When NJCU scored 31 runs and 36 hits in 10 innings in a 16-0 and 15-2 road sweep of Lehman College on March 27, Matsutani went 6-for-6 with six runs, five RBIs and two triples.
In NJCU’s 6-5 win at Rutgers-Camden, she was 1-for-3 with one run and a walk after walking three times in the first game against the Scarlet Raptors. She scored the game’s eventual winning run.
On March 26, she was 1-for-3 in a 2-0 loss to Drew University in the opening game of a twinbill, before going 1-for-4 in game two as the Knights fell 5-2.
In 16 games, Matsutani leads NJCU by .100 points in batting average at .500 (22-44). She has 19 runs, four triples and one homerun, along with 11 RBIs. She has accumulated 33 total bases and with 13 walks owns a .614 on-base percentage. She is 5-for-6 in steals, and has added a .750 slugging percentage. Defensively, she is the backbone of the Knights. Matsutani owns a .962 fielding percentage with only three errors in 79 chances.
Matsutani currently leads the NJAC in batting average and on-base percentage—58 points ahead of any other player in the league in reaching base. She also is the NJAC leader in triples and now with 12 for her career, is NJCU’s all-time leader in the category by three. Additionally, she ranks tied for second in walks, tied for third in slugging, tied for sixth in runs, and tied for eighth in total bases. Her .537 average against right-handed pitchers is tops in the NJAC by 49 points.
When she is the leadoff hitter in an inning, she has reached 75 percent of the time. She also has a .600 batting average with runners in scoring position—the best in the NJAC by 67 points. She is tied for the NJAC lead in batting averaging with RBI opportunities (.625) and also leads the NJAC in percentage advancing runners (.792). Defensively, she has turned five double plays, which also is tied for the NAJC lead.
