EBONY BARNES (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week.
Barnes was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for week three of the 2008 season. Overall, she has earned the NJAC Track Athlete of the Week nine times between the indoor and outdoor seasons over the last two years.
Barnes was simply unbeatable at the Osprey Open in Pomona, NJ on April 5, winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes while anchoring NJCU’s winning 4x100-meter relay team—qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the 200 and the relay.
Barnes had already qualified provisionally for the NCAAs in both the 100 and 200 dashes prior to the meet. Her time of 12.15 seconds on March 29 is currently the second fastest in the nation this year, and at the Osprey Open she placed first of 35 sprinters in the 100 meters, timing 12.34 seconds, to win by 27/100th of a second.
She was even more dominant in the 200 meters, clocking 25.04 seconds to win by 44/100th of a second, blowing away a field of 57 athletes. The NCAA provisional time is 25.32, and the 25.04 mark was Barnes’ best of her career, eclipsing the mark of 25.19 she posted on April 22, 2007 at the Collegiate Track Conference championship. It easily was better than the NCAA time of 25.25 she ran last week at the Terrapin Invitational and is the fourth fastest time in Division III so far this season.
Barnes also anchored the 4x100-meter relay which placed first of 11 schools in 48.10 seconds. The winning time, 37/100th of a second better than the field, was also an NCAA provisional qualifying result (48.65 seconds) and is the fourth fastest in Division III this year.
