WEEK of: SEPTEMBER 10-16, 2007
For the third time in his career, junior forward/midfielder CRISTHIAN ACUNA (East Newark, NJ/Harrison) has been named the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week. He also was selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his brilliant collegiate career after scoring four goals and adding two assists for 10 points in a 2-0 week for the Gothic Knights (5-2).
His award marks the second consecutive time in the first three weeks of the season that a 2006 All-NJAC Gothic Knight veteran has received the top conference offensive award; junior midfielder EDISON BILBAO (Carteret, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) took home the accolade on September 10.
Acuna, a First-Team All-NJAC and First-Team D3Kicks.com All-Region selection in 2006, took over the 2007 team lead in both goals (7) and points (19) and now has five assists. It was his third career multiple goal game and second of this season.
He opened the week on September 15, helping NJCU open its 2007 NJAC schedule with a 3-0 road win over William Paterson University. After assisting on the game winner in the 23rd minute, Acuna put the game out of reach at 71:31 when he knocked in his fourth goal of the season for a 3-0 lead.
In NJCU’s 4-2 non-conference win over St. Joseph’s College (NY) on September 16, Acuna contributed to all four of the Gothic Knight goals, scoring his first career hat trick and assisting on the eventual game-winner to move into fifth place in school history in points.
Acuna’s seven points against St. Joseph’s give him 64 for his career, with 19 goals and 26 assists. He moved into a share of second place in program history in assists—matching former All-American Chris Rosenthal—and five off Johan Gonzalez’ club standard of 31.
NJCU opened a 1-0 lead at 11:04 of the first half when Acuna finished a one-on-one breakaway against the opposing keeper for an easy tally.
Acuna made it 2-0 at 29:55 when he zipped in a shot from 10 yards out. Just 1:52 later, Acuna delivered a solid corner kick on the left side, which was headed in for the eventual game-winning goal and a 3-0 lead.
Acuna put NJCU in front 4-0 at 57:54, when he was taken down in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick. He is now a perfect 6-for-6 in career penalty kicks.
On the season, through September 16, Acuna leads the NJAC in points (19) and points per game (3.17), ranks second in goals (7) and goals per game (1.17), third in assists (5) and assists per game (0.83), tied for third in shots per game (3.67), and tied for fourth in shots (22).
