WEEK of: OCTOBER 15-21, 2007
For the third time this season freshman striker JENNIFER ALBUJA (Union City, NJ/Hoboken) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week after she scored three goals and had an assist in a 1-2 week for the Gothic Knights to extend her single-season school records for 24 goals and 51 points, while extending her New Jersey Athletic Conference lead in goals.
In a 6-0 win over Penn State Berks on October 15, Albuja had a goal and an assist, scoring a goal for the fourth consecutive game and the 11th time in 15 games overall. For the sixth time this season, Albuja scored the first goal of a game for NJCU, netting her fourth game-winner just 4:53 into the contest. After receiving a feed, she lofted a straight-on shot from 18 yards out over the opposing keeper’s head for a 1-0 lead. At 37:59 of the period, NJCU scored an almost identical goal as Albuja notched her third assist of the year as NJCU led 2-0 at the half.
Although NJCU lost to Rowan, 6-2 on October 17, it was the first time in 10 all-time meetings that the Gothic Knights were NOT shutout as Albuja scored twice.
Albuja finished with her eighth multiple-goal game of the year, scoring both of NJCU’s unassisted goals to extend her single season school marks for goals and points. She became only the sixth place in the history of the NJAC to tally 50 points in a season and the second player in NJCU men’s or women’s soccer history (Chris Rosenthal, 59 points, 2004). Her 24 goals are tied for fifth most in NJAC single-season history. It is the first time since 2004 that any player in the league has had at least 24 goals and 50 points. Albuja scored a goal for NJCU in her fifth consecutive games and the 12th time in 16 games overall.
Trailing 2-0, Albuja cut the margin to 2-1 at 42:37. After gaining control of a pass from midfield, Albuja dribbled through the entire Rowan defense at the top of the box, made a nifty move into the right side of the box, and drilled a one-timer for her 23rd goal. Albuja scored a sensational goal to account for the final score with 47.8 seconds left. After she was dragged down at the top center of the box, she fired a free kick that curved in flight over the Rowan wall and was buried into the upper left corner, just under the crossbar, at 89:12. It was her eighth unassisted goal of the year.
In a loss to TCNJ on October 20, Albuja had both of NJCU’s shots, but didn’t score as TCNJ tripled teamed her on defense for most of the game.
Albuja currently leads the NJAC in four major offensive categories: goals (24), shots (104), and shots per game (6.12), tied for first in points (51) and second in points per game (3.00) and goals per game (1.41). Her four game-winners are tied for third in the NJAC.
