WEEK of: NOVEMBER 19-25, 2007
For the first time in her career, junior forward ALAIA ROBINSON (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) of the women's basketball team is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week after she enjoyed a monster week on the glass, setting a tournament record with 19.5 rebounds per game and earned All-Tournament Team accolades at the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament hosted by Marietta College in Ohio. Robinson, a transfer from Essex County Community College, has also been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Week for week two of the 2007-08 season. It is her first weekly award as a member of the Gothic Knights.
Robinson earned All-Tournament Team honors as she set a new Turkey Shoot Tournament record by grabbing 39 rebounds in two games, breaking the 20-year old record of 37 by Ohio Wesleyan's Jill Myers in 1987.
In two games at the 23rd annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Tournament hosted by Marietta College, Robinson averaged a double-double of 19.5 rebounds and 10.0 points with 2.0 steals per game. She shot .409 from the field (9-22) with 39 rebounds—16 offensive and 23 defensive.
In an 80-56 loss to 2007 North Coast Atlantic Conference (NCAC) champion and NCAA second round participant Denison College on November 24, Robinson became the first NJCU player in more than 10 years to record 20 rebounds in a game—a monster game of20 rebounds, 10 offensive, 10 defensive, and nine points in 31 minutes.
Her performance marked the first time since Alexis Nelson had 21 caroms at Kean University on February 1, 1997, that an NJCU women’s player has reached the 20-rebound plateau. Additionally, her 20 boards were the most since Shondelle Browne had 19 versus William Paterson University on January 25, 2003.
In a 49-43 loss to Marietta on November 25, Robinson hauled down 19 more rebounds to give her 55 in her last three games, and notched her second double-double of the season. Along with the 19 boards (13 defensive), she finished with 11 points and four steals in 31 minutes, shooting 5-of-12 from the field.
Through November 26, Robinson leads the NJAC in rebounding average (16.0) and offensive rebounding (7.50). She also ranks second in defensive rebounding (8.50) and tied for 19th in scoring (11.0). She is averaging a double-double for the season.
