Freshman power forward TOM McDERMOTT (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career and was also named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for week two of the 2007-08 season, after he played an important role in NJCU’s 84-73 road win over Briarcliffe College on November 20.
In 20 reserve minutes, he scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, and hauled in eight rebounds—six on the offensive glass. NJCU seized the lead for good with 6:57 left in the first half on a McDermott layup. With Briarcliffe threatening at several junctures of the second half, the Seahawks closed it to a six-point deficit with 2:25 remaining, 72-66. But McDermott had an offensive rebound and putback for a 74-66 mark with 1:57 left to seal off any comeback possibility.
So far, McDermott is averaging 7.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 13.0 minutes of action. He has 22 points and 19 rebounds (11 offensive) in 39 minutes and is shooting .529 from the field (9-17). He ranks second on NJCU in rebounding and fifth in scoring. Pro-rated to 40 minutes, he would average 19.5 rebounds and 22.6 points per game.
In the NJAC statistical leaders report through November 26, McDermott is third in the NJAC in offensive rebounding at 3.67 per game. Additionally, he is ninth in the league in rebounding and 12th in field goal percentage (.529).
