WEEK of: APRIL 21-27, 2008
Sophomore right-handed pitcher/first baseman LACEY SKOWRONSKI (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career and the first time this season after she crushed a pair of homeruns and was the winning pitcher in both games as New Jersey City University swept an NJAC doubleheader from Richard Stockton College on April 28 for the first time.

In eight games in a 4-4 week for NJCU, Skowronski batted .481 (13-27) with nine runs, seven RBIs, three homers and two doubles. She had a .563 on-base percentage and .889 slugging percentage and had a .976 fielding percentage in 42 chances. On the mound she was 2-3 with a 2.70 ERA.

In NJCU’s 9-3 and 8-7 sweep of Stockton, the Knights snapped a 15-game losing streak against the Ospreys, defeating RSC for the first time since 2000 and the first time at home since 1995. NJCU hit four homers in the doubleheader—two by Skowronski—to break the team single-season record with 15 homers.

Skowronski, the winning pitcher in both games of the doubleheader, also was the biggest offensive star, combining to go 5-for-5 with six RBIs, five runs, three walks and two homers while improving to 10-11 on the mound. In 10 innings in two games, she allowed only four hits.

In the 9-3 win, Skowronski was sensational on the mound and at the plate. She batted 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs while limiting the Ospreys to three hits in seven innings as she struck out five and walked two. Her two-run homer to left in the third inning tied the game at 3-3 before her fifth inning RBI single gave NJCU the lead for good. On the mound, Skowronski did not allow a hit after the third inning and retired the side in order in the seventh.

In the 8-7 win in game two, Skowronski was NJCU’s catalyst yet again. She started the game at first base, and was 1-for-1 with three RBIs and two runs, walking three times. Her lone hit was a bomb, as she blasted a three-run homer to straightaway center in NJCU’s six-run fourth inning as the Knights took a 7-3 lead. It was her second multi-homer doubleheader this season and her fifth homerun of the year. Now with six career homers, she is second in school history in the category.

She also was the winning pitcher (10-11) in relief, pitching the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. In 3.0 innings, she allowed only one hit, facing 10 batters overall.

On April 24 in NJCU’s 10-0 win over Staten Island, the biggest bat was Skowronski’s, the first baseman in the game, as she was 3-for-3 with two runs. She smacked a solo homerun to lead off the third inning—her third of the season and fourth of her career.

On April 23, Skowronski scored twice in NJCU’s 13-9 win at St. Joseph’s (NY). Skowronski entered in relief with the tying run on deck and no outs. She coaxed a harmless RBI groundout then picked up a huge K for the second out before forcing a groundout to seal the win. In game one, when NJCU lost 3-2 in 11 innings Skowronski went the distance for the Knights but took the hard-luck loss. In 10.2 innings she allowed two earned runs and nine hits, with three strikeouts and seven walks.

In a 5-1 loss to #17 Ramapo College on April 22, she was also solid on the mound. In 6.0 innings, she allowed only two earned runs and eight hits, with two strikeouts and two walks, but fell to 8-9. She was the offensive star of the game at the plate, going 3-for-4.
