New Jersey City University junior EBONY BARNES (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this season and the 10th time in her athletic career after she had her best career performance in the NCAA Championships, timing 11.94 seconds and placed third nationally in the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field 100-meter dash national finals, May 24 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
Barnes earns All-America honors in the 100 meters for the third consecutive year and in doing so becomes the third most decorated women’s track athlete in NJCU outdoor history. Only six-time All-American Diana Lawson (2001-03, 2005) and five-time All-American Denay Caldwell (2003-06) have been cited more than Barnes, now a three-time All-American in outdoor track and a four-time winner between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Barnes, sprinting from lane three, clocked the second fastest time of the season and of her career in 11.94 seconds, one of only four athletes in the meet to exceed 12 seconds. Barnes had been an All-American in 2006 and 2007, finishing eighth each year.
Barnes’ third place finish gave NJCU its only six points of the meet, as the Gothic Knights tied for 44th overall among the 83 schools that scored at least 1.0 points. The tie for 44th marks the eighth consecutive year that NJCU has scored in the standings at the NCAA Championships and was its best finish since being 28th in 2006.
In the 100-meter preliminaries on May 23, she was fourth of 20 overall and third in her hear, timing her third best career time—12.07 seconds.
On May 22 in the 200-meter dash national preliminaries, she tied her career high of exactly 25.00 seconds, but missed the NCAA finals by 6/100th of a second. She finished 12th of 26 national qualifiers in the event.
