MARC ROBINSON (Maplewood, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep)
is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week for the first time in his outdoor career and the second time this academic year after he was the top performer for
New Jersey City University, running the third leg of the 4x100-meter relay, as NJCU posted its fastest time of the season and parlayed that performance into All-America honors as the Gothic Knights finished sixth nationally in the finals of the event on May 24 at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Overall, the relay of junior MARCUS LEE (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), and freshmen JAYMARK BAILEY (Newark, NJ/Irvington), Robinson and SHERMAN GOREE (Camden, NJ/Camden) timed 41.22 seconds as each athlete earned All-America honors for the first time in their indoor or outdoor collegiate careers.
Lee, Bailey, Robinson and Goree become the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th different men’s athletes in school history—all since 2004—to earn NCAA All-America status and there have been 16 All-America awards bestowed on the outdoor program in that duration.
NJCU was just 1/100th of a second behind Ramapo College for fifth place in the finals, held at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
It is the second time in school history that NJCU has earned All-America honors in the 400-meter relay.
The sixth place finish by the relay team gave NJCU its only 3.0 points of the meet, as the Gothic Knights tied for 65th overall among the 81 schools that scored at least 0.5 points. It is the fourth time in five years that NJCU has scored in the standings at the NCAA Championships.
In the preliminary round on May 22, NJCU recorded at the time its then-best performance of the year, clocking 41.28 seconds, good for eighth among 15 national qualifiers and second among five teams in the second of three heats.
