WEEK of: NOVEMBER 26-DECEMBER 2, 2007
For the 10th time in her career and the second time this season, senior three-time All-American
VICKI SPRATFORD (Hopelawn, NJ/Woodbridge) is the NJCU Women's Athlete of thr Week, after she crushed the field with a 212.83 average to earn Most Valuable Player and All-Tournament Team honors, at the two-day St. Paul’s College Tournament, December 1-2.
Her efforts helped the #7 ranked NJCU women’s bowling team right the ship with a tremendous 10-1 NCAA record, to improved to 31-14 overall. The Gothic Knights placed second among 17 teams, and NJCU won nine consecutive matches to close the tournament.
Spratford had a staggering advantage over her closest competition in the 110-woman field, finishing with a 7.50 higher pin per game average than fellow All-American Bryanna Caldwell of the University of Central Missouri (205.33). Spratford finished with a six-game series of 1277 (193-185-200-211-234-254)—a remarkable 45 pins better than Caldwell and the rest of the field. It was the second consecutive event in which she was named to an All-Tournament Team after also earning that honor at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic.
“I won this tournament last year and it was nice to repeat,” said Spratford. “After struggling earlier in the year, I’m especially pleased with how I performed.”
In the final standings, #4 Central Missouri was first with a 9,773 pinfall (9-1 record), followed by NJCU, which posted a 9,445 total, and leap-frogged #3 University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the latter stages of the second day to claim second place.
Spratford's play also helped the Knights claim arguably the most important victory this season, as NJCU defeated Central Missouri, 721-707 in a four-game Baker match. The Knights trailed heading into the final five frames of the fourth game. But the Baker lineup, anchored by Spratford, made a huge statement by uncorking six consecutive strikes, including two in the 10th frame by Spratford, to seal the 14-pin victory, and begin to ascend upon the standings.
