For the ninth time in his career and the first time this season, junior All-America shooting guard
DANA JOHN (Hillside, NJ/Pocono Mountain East (Pa.)) is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week after he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 steals, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 90.5 percent from the line (19-21), 21-50 from the field (.420) and 11-28 from three-point range (.393). He also became NJCU’s all-time leader in three-pointers made just 62 games into his career, and accomplished all of this despite the distraction of being shadowed by an ESPN Television crew for three days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, November 27-29—something most Division III athletes will never have to balance. He led the Gothic Knights to a 2-1 week in three games, and the first win of the 2007-08 New Jersey Athletic Conference calendar.
In an 82-77 win over Rowan University in the first NJAC game of the year on December 1, John scored 15 of his team-high 28 points in the second half and shot a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line, as NJCU rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to hand Rowan its first loss of the year. The clutch John had 14 points late in the game after NJCU fell behind by a dozen.
John, who made 8-of-8 from the line in the second half alone, finished with 28 points to bring his career total to 971—just 29 shy of becoming the 26th member of the 1000-point club. He shot 7-of-18 from the line and 3-of-8 from three-point range, matching his career-high with six steals in 35 minutes.
NJCU is now 14-4 all-time when John scores 20 in a game. It is the fourth time this season in six games he has scored 20, bringing his scoring average to 22.7. It’s the third time he has scored 20 against Rowan. John’s lay-up with 3:47 left broke a 68-68 tie and his fast-break John bucket with 2:52 left gave NJCU a 74-69 margin. Rowan momentarily moved back on top, 75-74 before John converted 6-of-6 from the line in the final 27 seconds to put the game away and give NJCU a five-point victory.
In a 65-59 win over Farmingdale State College on November 28, John, with the ESPN cameras rolling, became NJCU’s all-time career three-point record with 162 in 62 games, eclipsing the program mark of 160 achieved by former teammate Mark Washington in 104 games from 2002-06 (516 attempts). John, who accomplished the milestone on the 442nd attempt of his career, reached the record in 74 fewer shots.
John heated up in the second half of a close game, finishing with a team-high 17 points (4-13 FG). He was 3-of-8 from three-point range, 6-of-7 from the line, and converted four of his final five shots, including three three-pointers. His record-breaking three came on a shot from 24-feet out on the right wing with 8:02 remaining.
Farmingdale trimmed NJCU’s lead to four, 58-54 with 2:00 left before John drained a huge three from the right wing with 53 seconds left.
In a 68-56 road loss to Lycoming College on November 26, John was NJCU’s only player in double figures. John scored nearly half of NJCU’s 56 points, including 19 of NJCU’s 31 total in the first half. John finished 10-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-12 from three-point range, with four of NJCU’s eight steals, while playing 37 minutes.
Through December 2, John is second in the NJAC in scoring average, at 22.7 per game.
