LIZZELLE CINTRON is the NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week for the fourth week in a row and 29th time in her remarkable career, this time taking home co-Player honors, as she helped NJCU finish 2-0 in light week of action while the Gothic Knights extended its home court winning streak to 35 matches.
She averaged 7.67 points, 5.83 kills, 2.50 digs, 1.67 blocks and 0.83 aces per game, with 46.0 points, 35 kills, 10 blocks, and five aces in six games over two matches. She hit .361 overall for the week. NJCU is 14-4 overall and 3-0 in the league.
In a 3-1 (31-29, 23-30, 30-21, 30-16) victory over Ramapo College on September 25, Cintron blasted 29 kills to move into 11th place in Division I, II and III history with 2,609, and added 13 digs and nine blocks for her 96th career double-double. Overall, Cintron hit .321 with 29 kills in 53 attempts (29-12-53), 13 digs, nine blocks (seven assisted) and three aces. She had more than half of her team’s 56 kills. She recorded her 200th career ace and 300th career block assist, as she continued to close in on 600 career total blocks. In addition to her 96th double-double, the 29 kills represented the 32nd time in her career and the fifth time this season that Cintron has tallied 25 or more kills in a single match.
On the NCAA’s all-time career kills, list she moved into 11th place in her 446th game by passing the University of Hawaii’s Kim Willoughby, who had 2,598 kills (439 games) from 2000-03. Next on the list in 10th place is University of Georgia’s Priscilla Pacheco (2,675 kills, 480 games, 1991-94) and Division II Northwood (MI)’s Pavla Melicharova with 2,676 kills (448 games, 1993-96) in ninth.
In NJCU’s 3-0 win over John Jay College (30-17, 30-20, 30-18) in a non-conference contest on September 27, NJCU extended its home court streak to 35. Cintron only needed to play the first game of the match, and hit .625 in that span, with six kills (6-1-8) and two aces. She increased her career kills mark to 2,615.
She currently ranks second in Division III in kills per game and total kills and 18th in hitting percentage.
In the NJAC statistical leaders through matches of October 1, Cintron leads the league in kills per game (5.73), total kills (367, second place player has 280), blocks per game (1.17), total points (442.0), points per game (6.91, second place player has 5.03 per game), total blocks (75.0), and assisted blocks (52), ranks second in hitting percentage (.398), sixth in total digs (218). and seventh in digs per game (3.41).
