WEEK of: OCTOBER 22-28, 2007
For the first time in his career freshman goalkeeper ANDRE VIOLA (Clifton, NJ/St. Joseph’s Regional (Montvale)) is the NJCU Men’s Athlete of the Week after he registered his fifth straight shutout and sixth in seven games to break the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes and tied the program standard for consecutive shutouts.
On October 22, he helped then #16 ranked New Jersey City University overcome a sluggish offensive effort to post a 1-0 non-conference road victory over SUNY-Farmingdale.
NJCU won for the seventh game in a row and 12th time in 13 outings. The seventh consecutive victory matched the school record winning streak, also accomplished in 2001, 2004 and 2005. NJCU, which had not allowed a goal since October 3, collected its fifth consecutive shutout and its sixth in seven games, tying the 2003 club for consecutive shutouts (September 3-14, 2003).
Viola finished with three saves to notch his ninth shutout of the season and extended his streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 451:54, breaking the individual school record of 446:56 by Jeff East from October 14-25, 2000. After the win over the Rams, Viola had only allowed one goal in the team’s last 630:00 minutes of action. The 451:54 stretch is the second longest streak of scoreless minutes in school history. Two NJCU keepers combined for a string of 592:52 from August 31 to September 17, 2003.
After NJCU’s ranking increased to #8 nationally, Viola’s scoreless streak was eventually snapped at 458:57. Rutgers University-Camden scored 7:03 into a 1-1 tie at on October 24 —the first goal he had allowed since the waning moments of NJCU’s 6-1 win over Maritime College on October 3. But Viola made four saves and shutout the Scarlet Raptors in the final 102:57 of play to forge the 1-1 tie. After the Camden game, he had allowed just one goal over the last 561:54 of action.
The Scarlet Raptors had a chance to win the game with four minutes remaining in the second overtime, but a fine save by Viola robbed RCU of the game-winner.
