Junior right-handed pitcher NELSON MALDONADO (Newark, NJ/St. Mary’s (Jersey City)) is the NJCU Men’s Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career after a brilliant performance on the mound on April 9 in the Gothic Knights’ 6-1 road victory at Rutgers University-Camden for the team’s first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the season. Maldonado struck out a career-high eight batters and did not allow an earned run while posting the finest pitching performance of the season by a member of the Gothic Knight staff, tossing 8.0 innings of seven-hit baseball. He walked only one player and six of the Scarlet Raptors hits were singles. The eight K’s topped his previous career high of seven accomplished twice in 2009 as a rookie.
 
While winning his first game of the year (1-3), Maldonado lowered his ERA from 4.56 to 3.48. On the season he has made six appearances and five starts with one complete game. In 33.2 innings, he has 22 strikeouts and only nine walks, while allowing 13 earned runs (23 total) and 46 hits. He leads the NJCU pitching staff in strikeouts and ERA.
 
Among the NJAC leaders, Maldonado is seventh in starts, 14th in innings, 21st in strikeouts, and 35th in ERA. He is third in the league in ground ball to fly ball out ratio (2.08), fourth in total ground ball outs (50) and ground outs per game (13.37).
