JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman shooting guard Khalid Muhammad (Orange, NJ/Orange) of the men’s basketball team and sophomore point guard Ashley Vazquez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) of the women’s basketball team are the New Jersey City University Men’s and Women’s Athletes of the Week for the period of November 19-25. Muhammad earns the award for the second consecutive week; the honor is the first at NJCU for Vazquez.
Muhammad, the NJAC Rookie of the Week on November 19, has led NJCU in scoring in all three games to begin the 2012-13 season and scored in double figures in each. In a 67-60 setback on November 20 to #17 ranked Ramapo College, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder collected 10 points, four rebounds (all offensive) and three steals with one block in 25 minutes, while shooting 5-of-12 from the field.
On the season he is averaging 15.7 points (47), 4.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.0 assists per game while shooting .500 from the field (18-36), .455 from three-point distance (.455) and .500 from the line (6-12). Among the NJAC scoring leaders he currently ranks eighth in scoring and field goal percentage, ninth in three-point percentage, 12th in three-pointers made per game (1.7), and 14th in steals and offensive rebounding (2.7 per game).
