JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman shooting guard Khalid Muhammad (Orange, NJ/Orange) of the men’s basketball team and sophomore point guard Ashley Vazquez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) of the women’s basketball team are the New Jersey City University Men’s and Women’s Athletes of the Week for the period of November 19-25. Muhammad earns the award for the second consecutive week; the honor is the first at NJCU for Vazquez.
Vazquez, a first-year Gothic Knight after transferring from Division II Slippery Rock University, has scored in double figures in two of three games this season and led the Knights in assists in all contests so far. In a 64-51 loss to Ramapo on November 20, she scored 10 points, with three assists and only two turnovers in 25 minutes of action, while grabbing two boards. She shot 3-of-8 from the field (.375), 2-of-5 from three-point range (.400) and made both foul shots attempted.
In the early going, Vazquez has averaged 11.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists with a 0.8 assists/turnover ratio, in 80 minutes of action. She is shooting a blistering .857 from the line (6-7), .423 from the field (11-26) and a solid .462 from three-point range (6-13). In the NJAC she currently ranks fourth in free throw percentage, fifth in three-pointers made per game (2.0), seventh in three-point percentage, 12th in assists and assist/turnover ratio and 16th in scoring.
