Sonja Shirak
Shirak earns NJCU Athlete of the Week honors for the third time in her career and first time in 2012-13 after earning All-Tournament Team accolades with a fourth place finish out of 43 bowlers at the Red Flash Invitational on November 30 and December 1 and 2 in Altoona, Pa.
Shirak, a 2011-12 Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team selection and two-time NEC Rookie of the Week last year, earned the third All-Tournament selection of her young career by finishing with the fourth highest pinfall at 967 and a five-game traditional average of 193.4, including a 201, 238 and 207 in the final three matches on December 1 as the Knights defeated Medaille College (883-809), Penn State University-Altoona (936-744) and Salem International University (869-715).
NJCU, ranked No. 13 in both the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) Coaches and Media preseason polls, went a combined 7-5 at the tournament and placed fourth overall in the field to up its three event season won-loss record to 18-16.
Overall for the tournament Shirak had 36 strikes and 27 spares with only 13 open frames. She finished with a strike percentage of 47 percent and spare rate of 68 percent.
