Sophomore midfielder/forward Aboubacar Diawara (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) of the men’s soccer team and Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) of the women’s volleyball team are the New Jersey City University Athletes of the Week for the period of August 30 thru September 1, 2013 and the first winners of the 2013-14 academic year. Diawara is a first-time selection.
Â
Diawara, a Criminal Justice major, notched the first multiple-goal game of his career on September 1 in NJCU’s 8-1 road rout of College of Staten Island in the second round of the CSI Soccer Fall Classic. Diawara attempted four shots in two games and all four were on goal. Against Staten Island, he scored the first two goals of the game, coming at the 12:39 and 20:44 marks. The second goal was the first of three goals by three different NJCU players in a span of 2:14—the 11th fastest recorded such occurrence in NCAA Division III history.
Â
Meanwhile, his second goal proved to be the third game-winner out of six goals he has scored in two collegiate seasons (September 8, 2012 vs. Keystone and September 9, 2012 vs. Richard Stockton).
