Sophomore midfielder/forward Aboubacar Diawara (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) of the men’s soccer team and Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) of the women’s volleyball team are the New Jersey City University Athletes of the Week for the period of August 30 thru September 1, 2013 and the first winners of the 2013-14 academic year.
Â
Medley receives the award for the fourth time in her collegiate career—three times for women’s volleyball (October 3 and 24, 2011) and once for women’s basketball (December 17, 2012). Â
Medley was the bright spot in a 0-4 opening weekend for the Gothic Knight women’s volleyball team. She posted a .226 attack percentage in four matches (three starts), contributing 33.5 points, 25 kills, 10 blocks (seven solo, three assisted) and three digs in 14 sets. She averaged 2.39 points, 1.79 kills and 0.71 blocks per set.
Â
In a five-set loss at College of Saint Elizabeth on August 30, Medley, a Psychology major with a minor in Criminal Justice, planted 10 kills, hit .273 (19-4-22) and rejected three solo blocks. It was her 14th career effort of double-digit kills. On August 31, she hit a stellar .538 with eight kills against one error (13 attempts) while stuffing three blocks in a 3-0 loss at Bryn Mawr College. Later that day she put away seven kills (7-3-18, .222) and four blocks, including three solo, in a neutral-site loss to Wesley College.
