JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | For the second consecutive week to open the 2013-14 academic year, sophomore midfielder/forward Aboubacar Diawara (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) of the men’s soccer team and Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) of the women’s volleyball team are the New Jersey City University Athletes of the Week. The honor is for the period of September 2-8, 2013.
Medley receives the award for the fifth time in her collegiate career—four times for women’s volleyball (October 3 and 24, 2011 and September 2, 2013) and once for women’s basketball (December 17, 2012). Diawara is now a two-time selection.
ABOUBACAR DIAWARA
Diawara, a Criminal Justice major, netted a pair of goals in a 1-2 week for the Gothic Knights, scoring the first goal of the game in a 5-3 home win over CCNY (15:13 mark) on September 4 and a 2-1 road loss at Goucher College (5:14 mark) in Towson, Md. on September 8. Now with four goals in five games, he has scored the first goal of a game in each of the three matches this year in which the Gothic Knights have scored. Last week, he had seven shots with five on goal.
Thus far in 2013, nine of his 11 shots have been on target for a .818 shots on goal percentage. Through games of September 8, he is among the New Jersey Athletic Conference offensive leaders in six categories: goals (4th), points (8, 6th), goals per game (0.80, 7th), game-winning goals (1, 8th), points per game (1.60, 11th), and shots (15th).
