Senior defensive center midfielder Mohamed Conteh (Trenton, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) of the men’s soccer team is the recipient of the New Jersey City University Athlete of the Week for September 16, 2013. The honor is for the period of September 9-15, 2013 and marks the first time the All-NJAC and All-Region standout has been named Athlete of the Week in his two-year NJCU career.

MOHAMED CONTEH
Conteh, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound Business Management major and two-year team co-captain, earns the honor after having a direct influence on the first three scores of the game with a goal and two assists as NJCU snapped a two-game skid of one-goal losses by blowing past Baruch College, 6-1, in a non-conference home game on September 11 in the Gothic Knights’ only game of the week.

Conteh was a 2012 Second-Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection as a back and claimed NCAA Division III NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region Third Team honors.

In the win over Baruch, Conteh, with a little luck, could have scored NJCU's first three goals of the game. Early in the ninth minute, Conteh made a nifty move to dribble past several Bearcats, shedding defenders on his way to the net before clanking a shot from the left middle of the box off the outside far right post. Teammate Andy Caban (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) was there to put away the rebound at the 9:06 mark.

Just 1:47 later, Conteh claimed his second goal of the season. After a corner kick was cleared out of the box, a scramble ensued inside the penalty arc on top of the 18. Conteh got to the ball, using his 6-foot-3 frame to win possession before he hit a top-shelf side-legged shot down the middle of the target at 10:53.

At 23:18, Conteh picked up his third assist of the year, when he unleashed a shot from the left side of the box. Once again the rebound came to the right post and Caban was there to knock it in to give NJCU’s lone senior his second assist of the game.

Through September 15 Conteh’s two goals and three assists in six games (six starts) make him second on the team with seven points. Meanwhile in 439 minutes of action he has 15 shots this year (four on goal) with one game-winner. The back currently ranks eighth in the NJAC in assists per game (0.50), ninth in assists, 10th in game-winning goals, 16th in shots and shots per game (2.50) and 20th in points.
