Junior guard Ashley Vazquez (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) of the women’s basketball team is the New Jersey City University Athletes of the Week for January 13, 2014. The honor is for the period of January 6-12, 2014. Vazquez collects the accolade for the fourth time this year and seventh time in two seasons as a Gothic Knight.

Vazquez continued to play solid basketball for NJCU, averaging 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.5 steals in two games. She closed in on 500 career points, upping her two-year scoring total to 491 points in 38 games and the 5-foot-2 junior reached double digits in scoring for 30th time in 38 outings as a Gothic Knight. She also scored in double figures for the 11th and 12th times in 13 games this year.
A Political Science major with a minor in Criminal Justice, she shot .346 from the field last week (9-26), .333 from three-point range (4-12) and .750 from the free throw line (6-8), tallying 28 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a steal in 70 minutes.
In a 60-34 loss to #11/11 Montclair State on January 8, she scored eight of NJCU's 19 first half points, tallying a team-high 11 points with five rebounds and two assists.
A 71-60 loss at William Paterson on January 11 spoiled a solid performance from Vazquez, who scored a game-high 17 points, shooting 7-of-14 overall and 3-of-6 from three-point territory. She added four boards in 33 minutes before fouling out for the first time in 38 career games.
For the year she is averaging 13.7 points (178), 4.8 rebounds (19-44-63), 2.6 assists (34), and 2.0 steals (26) in 36.4 minutes per game (473). She is shooting .373 from the field (63-169), .286 from three-point distance (20-70) and .681 from the foul line (32-47).
As of January 12 in the NJAC Conference statistical rankings, she leads the league in minutes played and lists seventh in three-pointers made per game (1.5), ninth in in three-point percentage, 10th in scoring, 13th in steals and assists and 15th in free throw percentage.
Vazquez previously was named Athlete of the Week this season on November 25 and December 9 and 23. As a sophomore she collected the honor on November 26 and December 3, 2012 and January 28, 2013.
