ANTHONY FLORES is the NJCU Men's Athlete of the Week after the senior sweeper keyed a defensive unit which allowed just 17 shots in three games, while helping the nationally ranked Gothic Knights go 3-0, while winning the NJCU/adidas Liberty Cup for the third consecutive year. For his efforts he was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro Defensive Player of the Week
and the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
Flores—a team co-captain who also is serving as the sports editor of the Gothic Times student newspaper for a third year—earned All-Tournament Team honors for his brilliance in securing the NJCU backfield last week. NJCU went 3-0, while allowing just one goal overall and 5.66 shots per game.
In a 5-0 road win over John Jay College on September 6, the Bloodhounds could only muster five shots. In the first round of the Liberty Cup on September 9, Flores helped the Knights limit tournament runner-up Dickinson College to eight shots and one goal. On September 10 in the tournament’s second round, Flores led a smothering defense which allowed only four shots.
On the season, Flores leads the team with 406 minutes played of a possible 450. The NJCU defense has posted three shutouts, and has surrendered just four goals in five games, with only 50 shots against and 20 on goal.
