Freshman power forward Sam Toney (Somerdale, N.J./Williamstown) is a first-time winner of the award.
 
Sam Toney:
  • Toney was also selected the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
  • Tabbed to the  MBWA Men’s Division II-III Honorable Mention list for the week by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association.
  • Toney, also previously named NJAC Rookie of the Week for week one of the season on November 21, has helped lead NJCU to a 6-1 overall mark, a 3-0 NJAC ledger and a four-game winning streak, while also receiving votes in the national poll.
  • The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Professional Security Studies major—minoring in Criminal Justice—helped lead NJCU to two more NJAC victories.
  • He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 60.9 percent from the field (14-23) with averages of 1.5 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.5 blocks per game.
  • He notched his third double-double in his last five games to open his career.
  • Toney has now scored 17 points in three consecutive games.
  • On November 30 in a challenging 71-69 road overtime win at William Paterson, Toney hit key free throws in the final 10 seconds as NJCU overcame the Pioneers. Late in the second half, a jumper by Toney gave NJCU a 60-56 edge with 2:35 left.
  • In the win at William Paterson, Toney led all players in scoring. He matched his career scoring and rebounding highs as he produced 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting with 10 rebounds in 37 minutes.
  • In an 81-64 home win on December 3 against Rutgers-Camden, Toney connected on 7-of-9 shots including 3-of-5 three-point shots and generated 17 points in just 20 minutes of action. He had four boards and two assists in the win. Toney scored 11 points in 13 minutes in the first half when he shot 5-of-6 from the field.
  • With the Gothic Knights up by 20 with early in the second half, NJCU’s starters did not play in the final 12:30 of the game.
  • On the season, Toney has started all seven games and is averaging 11.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 0.9 assists and 0.9 steals while playing 23.0 minutes per game. He is shooting 86.7 percent from the line (13-15).
  • Toney has scored in double figures in four consecutive games and five times this season. After starting the year 8-of-37 from the field, he is shooting a scintillating 19-of-31—61.3 percent—over the last three games.
  • In the NJAC rankings as of December 5, Toney currently lists first among all freshmen in scoring and rebounding; in fact no other freshman ranks in the Top 20 in the league in rebounds.
  • Overall he is fifth among all NJAC players in blocked shots, sixth in three-pointers made per game (3.0), ninth in defensive rebounding (5.0 per game), 10th in scoring, 12th in three-point percentage (.389), 14th in offensive rebounding (2.0 per game),  and 19th in scoring.
