NJCU senior center midfielder Mallensy Vargas is the NJCU Women’s Athlete of the Week for the 10th time in her career and second week in a row. Last week’s National Player of the Week continued to dominate, both conference and non-conference opponents alike, to run NJCU’s unbeaten streak to seven consecutive games—its longest stretch since 2011. Vargas produced six more points in two games, scoring twice and assisting two more goals while producing one game-winning goal and one game-tying goal. In 181 minutes at center mid, she collected 15 shots, putting eight on goal. Vargas, the NCAA Division III national leader in goals, goals per game, points and points per game, now has 16 goals, 7 assists and 39 points in eight games.

On September 18 in a 4-0 win over previous perfect Purchase College (3-0-0 entering the game), Vargas scored her fourth game-winning goal of the season at the 7:47 mark of the first half—then assisted on a strike in the 34th minute. Just 1:26 later her other scoring partner,  Arame Diouf scored the first of her two tallies, also assisted by Vargas, to make it 3-0 at halftime. Vargas upped her season totals to 15 goals, seven assists and 37 points entering the start of NJAC play. By contributing to the first three goals of the game, Vargas extended her incredible streak of scoring or assisting to 16 consecutive goals over a four-game span.

On September 21 in a 1-1 double overtime road draw at Ramapo, it was again Vargas who did the damage for the Knights, scoring the game-tying goal in the 60th minute—her NCAA all-divisions, all-genders leading 16th goal of the season. Trailing, 1-0, following one of her patented weaving and dicing runs, Vargas evened things up at 1-1 with her 16th goal of the season, splitting multiple defenders along a 25-yard path to the goal. Vargas had a game-high seven shots, five of which were on target.

Over the last six games, NJCU has scored 23 goals and Vargas has contributed to 21 of them—14 goals and seven assists.

Vargas upped her career total to 131 points on 56 goals and 19 assists in 53 career games.
