Jarell ‘Rell’ Smith was appointed the third head women’s bowling coach in New Jersey City University history in August 2014. The 2018-19 campaign marked his fifth as the program’s head coach which competed as an affiliate member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for a fourth season.

In its first season in the AMCC in 2015-16, Smith recruited and coached a First-Team All-AMCC selection and three-time weekly Honor Roll pick in freshman Autumn Fortunato. She would become a four-time All-AMCC selection, including First-Team All-Conference in three consecutive years from 2016-18. She is a three-time winner of NJCU’s Thomas M. NJCU made four appearances in the AMCC Tournament during his tenure (2015, 26016, 2017, 2018). Additionally, women’s bowling captured five consecutive Presidential Team Academic Achievement Awards during his tenure—an honor presented at the annual awards banquet to the NJCU athletic team with the highest cumulative GPA. The 2016-17 squad set a school record for top overall GPA at 3.599.

Smith, who made his collegiate coaching debut in 2014-15, holds United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Coaching Level I certification. As of July 2018, he is a USBC Bronze Level Instructor and plans on completing the Silver Level in the summer of 2019.

Off the lanes, Smith also serves as a retention coach for NJCU’s Athletic Academic Retention Program (AARP), which includes monitoring study hall activities. Additionally, Smith is NJCU’s Outdoor Sports Site Supervisor, overseeing events at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex for soccer, baseball and softball, including issues with field and site maintenance, payment of officials, crowd control and assisting visiting teams.

An accomplished player, he has thrown 10 300 games, five 11-in-a-row games and two 800 series. On February 27, 2009, he earned a USBC National Team Series Recognition award.
