TENAFLY, NJ…Ted Flogaites was one of the greatest boys soccer players in the history of Bergen County when he took the field for Tenafly High School from 1989-1992. On October 20, Flogaites, a 1993 graduate of Tenafly High School, and the current head women’s soccer coach at New Jersey City University, was enshrined in his alma mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
“It is an honor to be rewarded for a sustained period of excellence,” Flogaites said of his induction. “It means a great deal to me. But accolades and rewards are not the result of individual effort. It is a testament to the character and heart of the players I played with and to coach Bill Jaeger’s dedication to making me a better player and person. I am nothing without them.”
Flogaites was a mainstay on the Tiger soccer team for four years at the beginning of the 1990s, and was the first freshman in school history selected for the varsity roster. Described by Jaeger as “a passionate midfielder who was the heart and soul of the Tigers’ soccer squad,” Flogaites was a star and co-captain of the 1992 Tenafly championship team that may have been the finest ever coached by Jaeger. Flogaites, along with teammates Jon Kind, Evan Dabby, and Josh Freeman led the Tigers to the schools’ first-ever Bergen County championship over county powerhouse Don Bosco Prep, and won the BCSL American League championship with a perfect record. The Tigers finished the 1992 campaign at 17-2 overall.
Flogaites earned First-Team All-State Group III honors in 1991 and 1992. The center midfielder was also tabbed First-Team All-County and First-Team All-League for his play in those two seasons.
Tenafly won the BCSL American title both seasons Flogaites was All-League. He was selected to The Record (Hackensack, NJ) newspaper’s 1990’s All-Decade team and Honorable Mention All-Century.
He becomes the 83rd athlete and one of only 114 people ever enshrined in Tenafly’s Hall of Fame. The 2001 induction class included a total of 13 athletes.
A 1999 graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara with a B.A. degree in Philosophy, Flogaites played collegiately for the Gauchos under coach Mark Arya from 1995-1998.
He also has semi-professional playing experience, including time with the Destroyers in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the Vouliagmenis Futba Club in Vouliagmeni, Greece, Glyfada Omada in Glyfada, Greece, and the New Jersey Imperials.
Flogaites was named as the ninth head women’s soccer coach in the history of the NJCU program when his hiring was announced on January 18, 2001. Flogaites came to NJCU from Tenafly High School after he helped lead the freshman boys program of his alma mater to winning records in 1999 and 2000. He is currently pursuing his Masters degree in Health Science at NJCU. In his first season as head coach of the Gothic Knights, Flogaites led the team to a 5-13 record, the second best mark in the history of the program, in a season dedicated to the complete rebirth of the program.
He holds state and national ‘D’ coaching licenses, and has coached at some of New Jersey’s most prestigious youth camps, including the FDU Soccer Camp, Bergen’s Best Soccer Camp, and All-American Soccer camp.
