BOSTON, MA…Emmanuel College proved why they were a 2000 Final Four qualifier and are ranked 13th in the USA Today/WBCA pre-season poll on Saturday, as the Saints led from start to finish, and cruised past New Jersey City University, 88-49, in the second opening round game of the 19th Annual Emmanuel College Women’s Pepsi Tap-Off Tournament. The game was the 2002 season opener for both teams. The contest was played at Simmons College’s Holmes Sports Center.
NJCU (1-0) will move on to Sunday’s consolation game at 11am where they will face NAIA-affiliated Palm Beach Atlantic University (0-1). Emmanuel (1-0) will face Moravian College (1-0) in the 3pm title game. The Greyhounds were 78-63 winners over the Sailfish in the opening game of the afternoon.
Emmanuel jumped out to a 12-0 first-half advantage, behind 11 returning players from last year. The Saints owned a 43-22 edge at the half, courtesy of a 20-for-38 shooting period (52.6). They finished shooting 38-of-79 for 48.1 percent.
Meanwhile, NJCU hit on only 15-of-49 overall (30.6). The Gothic Knights were 19.2 percent from the field in period one.
NJCU was led by senior guard Annie Basulto (Miami, FL/Coral Park, FL), who scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting, and added 4-of-6 free throws.
The Saints received 14 points from senior center Lon Tega Morris (Providence, RI) and 12 more from junior guard Nessie Parham (Watertown, MA). Sophomore forward Paulette Johnson (Providence, RI) tallied nine points and seven boards. Freshman guard Evita Esteves (North Charleston, SC) made her collegiate debut a successful one, scoring eight points and dishing five assists. Freshman forward Katie Corey (Silver Spring, MD) had a solid first appearance, scoring seven and grabbing six rebounds, all offensively.
Emmanuel owned the glass, out-rebounding NJCU 53-34. The Knights were disadvantaged by 39 turnovers, compared with 26 by Emmanuel.
Overall, Emmanuel scored 66 of their 88 points in the paint (75.0 percent), versus 14 for the Knights. The Saints translated NJCU’s miscues into a 43-16 difference in points off turnovers. Emmanuel also racked up a 26-8 edge in second chance points, and was better in fast break points, 24-6.
