FORT MYERS, FL…New Jersey City University’s baseball team dropped their first game of the 2002 season, following a 3-0 start, in falling to Webster University (St. Louis, MO) by a 5-1 margin at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Gorloks (4-4) did all of their damage in the first two innings off of junior right-hander Mike Ingui (Lodi, NJ/Lodi), a transfer from Bergen Community College who was making his debut for the 3-1 Gothic Knights. Ingui allowed five earned runs and 11 hits in six innings, with eight walks and two strikeouts.

Meanwhile, Webster starter Chris Hearn (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) improved his freshman record to 2-0, allowing one earned run and six hits in five innings. He added three strikeouts and walked two.

The Gorloks put the game away in the first inning, as they batted around and notched four runs. Senior Mike Vaughn (St. Ann, MO/Ritenour) singled with one out and stole second. Webster drew two walks to load the bases, and scored their first runs on a RBI single to leftfield by junior designated hitter Cory Limpert (Herculaneum, MO/Herculaneum). Following a NJCU error and a third walk, sophomore infielder Luke Weld (Rural Dana, IL/Fieldcrest) added to the score with a RBI single to right. Limpert finished the day 2-for-3, while Vaughn was 2-of-2.

Sophomore second baseman John Maguire (Red Bank, NJ/Middletown South) was NJCU’s top hitter, going 3-for-4. The Knights registered their only run in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Jonathan Thomas (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) walked, Maguire single, and both moved over on a sac bunt by freshman first baseman Steve Yurchak (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne). Freshman Jim Dempsey (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) grounded out to shortstop for the lone RBI.

NJCU’s next game of the Florida trip is tomorrow at 9pm when the Knights face Roger Williams University of Bristol, RI.
