POMONA, NJ…In the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both schools, Richard Stockton College (5-0-0, 1-0 NJAC), ranked seventh in the latest NSCAA/adidas® Division III Top 25 poll, and first in the Mid-Atlantic Region, blanked New Jersey City University (0-3-1), by a 9-0 margin. The Ospreys led 7-0 at the break. It was NJCU’s third straight loss after a season-opening tie.
In defeat for NJCU, sophomore keeper GINA SGROI (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) stopped 12 shots.
Stockton scored twice in the opening 3:15 of the game to gain control for good. Kari Devine (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) tallied the game-winner 1:10 into the first half on a cross by junior midfielder Dana Ash (Ringwood, NJ/Immaculate Heary). Junior midfielder Megan Norcia (Brick, NJ/Brick) made it 2-0 at 3:15 on a cross from Kristie Abbott (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern), who finished with two assists.
Freshman Kelly Bass (Easthampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) was the only multiple goal-scorer for Stockton, notching back-to-back goals in a 2:02 span to give the Ospreys the 7-0 halftime cushion. Both goals were unassisted and were the first two of her career.
NJCU returns to action on Wednesday, September 24 at 3:30 pm in its first home game of the 2003 season, against NJAC opponent Kean University.
