CARINE CARVALHEIRO BECOMES NJCU ALL-TIME GOALS LEADER IN LOSS
JERSEY CITY, NJ…Junior midfielder Erin Salgado (Neptune, NJ/Neptune) scored twice, and freshman forward Erika Taugher (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas Aquinas) contributed three assists as Division II-New Jersey Institute of Technology scored four unanswered goals to snap a 1-1 halftime tie, and defeated New Jersey City University, 5-1, in a women’s soccer game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
In defeat, NJCU junior midfielder CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side), already the Gothic Knights’ all-time career leader in points, became the career leader in goals scored when she netted her 20th in three years to break a tie with Marie Merilus (2000-03).
The win for the Highlanders (3-7-1) breaks a three-game losing streak. NJCU (2-10-1) has lost five straight. NJIT leads the all-time series, 2-0-1.
NJIT opened up a 1-0 lead at 19:00 when freshman midfielder Amanda Bayiokos (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) notched the first goal of her career on a deflection off of NJCU goalkeeper CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), following a corner kick from the right side by Taugher. The goal for NJIT ended a streak of 361:22 without scoring a goal, spanning five games.
Carvalheiro knotted the game at 1-1 at 30:54 when she gathered a pass from freshman forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and rifled a straight-on shot from 30 yards out that sailed in off of the top of the hands of NJIT senior keeper Kate Duncan (Highlands Ranch, CO/Paramus Catholic (NJ)).
The game was even at the half, but Salgado netted the eventual game-winner just over four minutes into the second half, when she lifted an unassisted direct kick over Zieniuk from the deep right wing into the left corner at 49:14.
NJIT took control of the game with two goals in a span of 2:28. Junior forward Jillian Misiunas (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Hasbrouck Heights) smoked a one-timer on the right side of the box inside the right post at 61:16, off a cross by Taugher from the right endline.
When NJCU could not clear a corner kick by Taugher at 63:44, Salgado gave NJIT a 4-1 cushion when she ricocheted a shot off the left post that found a home in the right corner. It was her second goal of the year and Taugher’s fourth assist.
Freshman midfielder Katie Hepfinger (Mason, OH/Mason) concluded the scoring at 81:12, when she tracked down a turnover and struck a one-timer inside the right post from 30 yards out, to register her first career point.
Zieniuk played well, and made eight saves for NJCU in defeat. She had no chance to stop the final three goals of the game. Duncan set aside three NJCU shots. NJIT outshot the Knights, 24-7, including 17-4 in the second half.
NJCU returns to action on Saturday, October 16 at 12pm in game one of a women’s/men’s soccer doubleheader against Medgar Evers College in Jersey City.
