NJCU WOMEN OUTSHOOT MEDGAR EVERS, 25-5, AND BLANK COUGARS, 4-0

JERSEY CITY, NJ…New Jersey City University outshot Medgar Evers College 25-5, and posted its second shutout of the season, by blanking the Cougars, 4-0, in a women’s soccer non-conference game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.
 
                NJCU improves to 3-10-1 overall, snapping a five-game losing skid. MEC is 3-11. The Cougars were shutout for a seventh consecutive game, and have not scored a goal in more than 610 minutes of action during the seven-game losing streak. NJCU leads the all-time series with MEC, 2-0.
 
                Junior midfielder CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side), NJCU’s all-time leader in goal and points, eclipsed the 50-point plateau for her career when she gave the Gothic Knights  a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick at 10:07 of the first half. The goal was her seventh of the season and 21st career goal in three seasons.
 
                Freshman forward KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) made it 2-0 at 27:27 of the first half, when she lofted her sixth goal of the season over the MEC keeper off a turnover. NJCU led 2-0 at the intermission, while possessing an 11-1 clip in shots.
 
                Freshman forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) gave NJCU a 3-0 cushion with her third goal of the year at 76:22. Her breakaway goal in the box was set up by sophomore defender LUCY LONGOBUCCO (Harrison, NJ/Harrison), who uncorked a thru-ball from the deep right wing. The assist was the first in Longobucco’s career.
 
                Just over two minutes later, freshman midfielder JENNIFER RODRIGUEZ (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) notched her first collegiate goal and point when she concluded the scoring at 78:40. Feehan assisted on the play to tie Carvalheiro for the team lead in points with 15. Rodriguez accepted her pass and chipped a shot from the left side into the right corner over the opposing keeper.
 
                NJCU rookie goalkeeper CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) posted her second career shutout while stopping three shots. MEC received five saves from junior keeper Sheron Walcot (Brooklyn, NY/The Lodge).
 
                NJCU returns to action on Monday, October 18 at 4pm with a Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home game against the College of St. Elizabeth.
