CARVALHEIRO TIES CAREER GOALS RECORD IN DEFEAT
La PLUME, PA…Keystone College scored twice in the final 4:04 of regulation to break a 2-2 tie, and survived a test from New Jersey City University, before prevailing by a 4-2 decision. It was the first-ever meeting in women’s soccer between the two schools. Keystone is 3-6 overall. NJCU, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, is 2-6-1. NJCU outshot the Giants, 18-10 in defeat.
The two clubs played a scoreless first half, despite the Gothic Knights owning an 11-3 edge in shots in the opening period. However, when the second half rolled around, the offense for each team appeared.
Freshman midfielder Alysia Townsend (Willingboro, NJ/Hightstown) was the difference maker for Keystone, recording five points on two goals and one assist, including the game-winner. Freshman forward Lacy Standefer (Jermyn, PA/Lakeland) accounted for the other two goals.
Junior forward CARINE CARVALHEIRO (Newark, NJ/Newark-East Side), the all-time leading scorer in school history with 47 career points, tied the NJCU school record for career goals with 19, originally established by Marie Merilus (2000-03), when she gave the Knights a 1-0 lead after 57:41 of scoreless soccer with her fifth netter of the season. The goal was set-up with a double assist by freshman midfielder MARIA SANLES (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) and freshman forward KELLY DALY (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne). Both players tallied their first career assists, while Sanles, who sent the final feed to Carvalheiro in the box, also was credited with her first collegiate point.
Keystone tied it less than five minutes later as Townsend scored on an unassisted breakaway at 62:37, finally making a move to go around NJCU’s keeper in a one-on-one situation.
The Giants went ahead, 2-1, at 70:30, as Townsend drilled a direct kick which Standefer netted on a one-timer.
But just 23 seconds later, the Knights evened the game at 2-2 as freshman forward KATIE FEEHAN (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) lifted a hard shot from 35 yards over the Keystone keeper, with her fourth goal of the year at 70:53. She accounted for eight of NJCU’s 18 shots in the game.
It remained tied for 15 minutes, until Townsend blasted the eventual game-winner and the go-ahead goal at 85:56. Her second goal of the game was also unassisted.
With NJCU pushing its offense forward in the final minutes, the Giants added an insurance goal at 87:35 as Standefer chipped a high shot off the fingertips of NJCU freshman keeper CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne).
Zieniuk made two stops for NJCU. Her counterpart, sophomore Allison Martinelli (Montdale, PA/Lakeland) recorded four saves.
The Gothic Knights return to action on Wednesday, October 6 at 4pm with a contest at rival Rutgers University-Newark.
