NEWARK, NJ…Rutgers University-Newark scored three goals in a 2:40 span of the first half to break open a scoreless game, and defeated New Jersey City University, 4-0, in a women’s soccer game at Alumni Field. The win gave the Scarlet Raiders an 8-3-1 record, equaling the record of eight wins (8-10-0) achieved in the program’s fourth year in 2003. The loss was NJCU’s second straight (2-7-1).
Sophomore forward Marie Cassels (Yonkers, NY/Holy Child, Rye, NY) gave the Raiders all the offense they would need by logging goals at 11:06 and 12:27 of the opening period, both off assists from freshman forward Christine Pober (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown).
Cassels scored the opening goal off a cross from the left side. Her second goal, which gave her a team-best nine on the season and 19 points, was notched on a rebound of a hard shot initially saved by NJCU freshman goalkeeper CASSANDRA ZIENIUK (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne).
Newark’s third goal came at 13:46, as senior midfielder Catie Lomicky (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) scored on a lead pass into the box from freshman forward Diana Mecha (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch.
Pober added a goal of her own in the second half on a 30-yard bomb from the right side that fooled Zieniuk. The goal was Pober’s seventh tally this season and 19th point.
Freshman keeper Katie Hastings (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) made three saves to post her fifth shutout victory. Zieniuk made four saves for the Gothic Knights.
NJCU is back in action on Saturday, October 9 at 1pm when it visits Kean University in Hillside.
