FARMINGDALE, NY…Senior center SHARON BILLIPS (Brooklyn, NY/John Jay) scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while freshman forward I’SHAWNA WEST (Hempstead, NY/Hempstead) poured in 22, as SUNY-Farmingdale overcame a half-time deficit to outrun New Jersey City University, 82-67, in a Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Nold Hall. NJCU drops its third straight to fall to 1-3. Farmingdale is 2-2.
Freshman center ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) notched a career-high 18 points (7-of-19) to lead NJCU, and hauled down seven rebounds. Junior power forward MEGAN KABBA (Newark, NJ/Arts) tallied a double-double, with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and 10 boards.
Senior shooting guard ERIKA CUBILE (Jersey City, NJ/Academy of Saint Aloysius) finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and sophomore point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) reached double figures in scoring with 11 points, adding six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 38 minutes. Junior guard BERNICE AMADEO (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) contributed a game-high seven assists.
Billips, named to the d3Hoops.com Team of the Week on Monday, hit 11-of-17 for her 26 points, and had seven of her eight rebounds on the defensive glass. She added four assists and two blocks. West hit 9-of-17 shots, including three treys for 22 points, and added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in 37 minutes. Junior guard ANGELA WILLIAMS (New York, NY/Murry Bergtraum) had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while rejecting three shots.
After trailing 18-10 in the first half after a Billips three-pointer, NJCU pulled to within 20-18. NJCU twice owned a four-point lead in the first half, including 35-31 in the final moments, before FSU closed the gap to one, 35-34 at the break.
NJCU led 44-40 with 15:40 remaining before the Rams strung together a 13-0 run, capped by a Billips three to take a 53-44 lead with 12:34 left. After NJCU closed the gap to six, at 60-54, a 10-2 string by the Rams put the game away, when West drained a three-pointer with 4:09 on the board.
NJCU, which committed 26 turnovers, hit only 14-of-29 from the line. NJCU finished shooting 41.7
percent (25-of-60), while FSU made 47.8 percent of its shots (32-of-67).
NJCU next sees action on Saturday, December 4 at 6pm with a home Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Joseph’s College (LI).
